Cymdeithas yr Iaith Poster
If you’ve ever passed through Talybont just outside Aberystwyth, you’ve probably seen Nan Bowyer in all her glory on the famous Lolfa mural. The original photograph - taken by Raymond Daniel - captures the iconic “girl in the long coat,” a perfect snapshot of the spirit of Cymdeithas yr Iaith protests. The photo was taken during a rally supporting Dafydd Iwan after he was arrested during the 1970s campaign for Welsh-language road signs. Proper history-in-a-single-frame stuff.
Cymdeithas yr Iaith is a grassroots movement that’s been campaigning since the 1960s for the rights, status, and future of the Welsh language. From peaceful protests to punchy public actions, they’ve helped shape modern Welsh-language policy. Their logo - the “dragon’s tongue” - is now one of the most recognisable symbols in the story of the language struggle.
So if you’re interested in the history of the movement - or just love an iconic protest moment - this is the perfect poster for you.
